I found my last few matches weren't that bad other than me playing bad.  I got a regular SNES pad(partial NBT), which handles a lot better than any SNProgramPad or aftermarket pad that I was using previously.

The 2 SMB3 hack tourneys will start soon if anyone wants to play them.  Turtle Coin & Turtle Shrink:

You should use Bowser in battle if you want to reach the 1/4.  He fits your style more.

You mean DK then. But that's an interesting point, what exactly makes you think it fits better?

You seem to race when you play battle mode and then fire shells at top speed instead of making any adjustments.  If you play like that, it's easier to use Bowser/DK as there's hardly any point in slowing down when using those guys.  It's really hard to hit them at top speed.  It might help to practice an hour or so with DK to see how you fair.  In reality, you probably won't do any better or worse unless you've adjusted your style since the last years.

Can someone bring a decent pro-NBT pad for me this year?  I'll pay you 15 euros or whatever they cost.  Thanks.

My skills haven't really declined since 2008 although my Mario intimidation factor may have gone down.  I just blame it on a lack of focus prior to the tournament.  I try to stay focused for each match, but it's not enough.  If I trained more than battle beforehand, I would have more incentive and practice to stay focused, but hardly anyone wants to play PAL online.

Reaching 1/4 in MR & GP and earning 1st in battle should earn me 3rd, but I screw up too many longboosts and miss zoomstarts down the line.

As said before the best I can do would be:

TT: 1
GP: 3
BM: 1/4
MR: 3

Combining all in the same championship would already be a miracle and I think this wouldn't be enough to be #1 overall, even for #2...

I don't see any reason why I wouldn't use Yoshi next year unless I didn't come or I found out in practice that he wasn't workable anymore, which wouldn't make any sense because Scoub used Princess fine this year.  I just need to use Yoshi for a fair comparison of our BM levels.  If I do worse with Yoshi(more than a 1-point loss in the semis), I'll know Scoub/Geo have improved beyond my level.

Karel had the best argument for the advantages of certain characters in battle.  The main disadvantage for Bowser/DK is the mental strain on avoiding scenarios(mainly red on red) that you could easily work your way out of with Yoshi/Princess/Koopa/Toad due to their acceleration.  You don't want to get stuck near an opponent's red or even green with Bowser/DK/Mario/Luigi.

The main advantages of using the heavier guys is on offense though, especially on the outside of Course 1 and most of the lanes of Course 4 where it's mostly a chase.  I absolutely hate Course 4 for the chasing reason, but Course 2/3 have situations where you can hide on the back walls too.  I didn't have any legitimate red shots in the last game on Course 4.  When I had reds and could have put Scoub away, I blew all my chances by not taking the shot.  Twice, I stopped on the inside lane with a red against red, but I only paid for it the second time.  I really shouldn't have lost with a 7-5 lead, but you need to keep up your mental game at all times when playing an advanced battle level or your opponent will eat you alive.

I don't get it. People never say "Oh, that one was just a practice." during the competition as they know they're playing for real.

I was referring to the few minutes between each round when people are practicing.  At least going into the final 16, there shouldn't be any practice races allowed as it defeats the purpose of a one-try.

There shouldn't be any practice on the tracks from the start of the tourney till the finish as to avoid the problem of saying, "Oh, that one was just a practice."

We'll probably get about 40 players this year unless there's a wave of French participants.  Some people love to take a point off the good players, but others are demotivated by having to play skilled players knowing they'll lose 0-4 or 0-20.  Perhaps, we should give the players the option if they'd like to be grouped against better players(ranks 1-40) or worse players(ranks 16-40) for each mode, informing them that they'll get more points for beating the good players.  We could also split the system from a 50%/2 pools to 25% or 20% with 8-10 players each.  We could put 3 or 4 good players in each pool with 5 or 6 average and poor players.

But if we give the players the option of competing in an A-skill group(more playoff spots), a B-skill group, or even a C-skill group, it would make the matches more equal.  The one issue is the worse players like to play the good players at least once but not necessarily an equal amount of times.  If that's the case, perhaps each player could play out of their group(A, B, or C-skill) one or two matches for each mode.
