CDM 2018 / Bilan 2018
« le: 23 août 2018, à 02:55:54 »
Hello everyone, that mkdd guy here

As a short introduction: This was my very first CDM and before I went I was really curious as to how it was going to be.
But as you may have read in KVD's post:
Citer
Goomba having the week of his life (it felt like he was always smiling)

Pretty much rings true (although a bit exaggerated but y'know  :police:)
It really reminded me of the first time I had a karter "meet-up" which was BSG in 2016 November. It was the first time I met these people that you've read the name of, maybe seen a bunch of pictures or even a video, but seeing them in real life is just so much different. And this CDM just brought back that surrealistic feeling, but I'm getting ahead of myself here. Let's start with the first day.

After day "0" where Patrick, Lafungo, Chris and I met up, I started the day off with a solid 0 hours of sleep. I knew the venue from a previous BSG I've went to, but seeing TVs with SMK everywhere, hearing those sounds all around you and seeing new people was a lot to process all at once. Soon enough though the whole event started, the safety bar was down and I was strapped in along for the ride.

Time Trials
I performed worse than I had hoped but it wasn't an absolute shit show I suppose. Luckily Leyla was there with the crazy clutch runs to balance out the excitement and Aron spicing it up with the olympic record for fastest controller throwing, loudest Dutch swearing and overal love for the game. For real though -- Great job Leyla on reaching top 8 and grabbing the CDM UK TT champ title, fighting all the distractions literally thrown in your way (thanks dancing fortnite kiddies) (Also iirc, no missed zoomstarts?) and congrats to Mario for blessing us with his reaction (and the gold)

The next day was Battle Mode, in which I didn't participate. Perhaps it was because I was used to the MKDD battle mode which should never be touched at all, but primarily I ruled it out to me having no experience thus being fine with watching how everyone performs. Shoutouts to Chris, Lafungo and Conor for talking about the strategy and the mechanics in battle mode, making me realize the depth of Battle Mode and how many macro strats there actually are.

Later that afternoon/evening Aron walked up to me, rambling about setting up some kind of tournament. We gathered the group of MKDD'ers, and lo and behold -- The man himself got to work writing down a quick set up with pen and paper. I talked to Andreas and Richard the day before (Although I don't know if "talking" would qualify with Richard's state), but now Marijn was there as well and I know I've tweeted about this but really I couldn't stop smiling. Seeing these legends play against each other, just talking to them or even playing them myself was bizarre and astonishing at the same time. Just experiencing these two days alone just blew everything I expected out of the park.

Match Race
Since I'm garbage at SMK I didn't expect much but I did fairly well, tied Andreas 2-2, few wins here and there and iirc not getting 4-0'd except against Mario was pretty much the most I could hope for. Of course I choked a bunch of matches which should've been a win had I played well but that goes for both sides. Right after I finished my match a microphone suddenly appeared in front of my nose which an enthusiastic Dutch reporter who wanted to ask a few questions, which brings me to an interesting side topic

Media Coverage
Karel pretty much said it all, but to be honest this all only added to the experience. Being in this CDM 'bubble' and then having reporters walk around is the strangest thing. I actually got called by a radio station while in the car, asking for an online interview and one on the radio later that day. Another local reporter started interviewing me while I was queuing up for lunch, while I saw Karel ready to be asked why he still plays this old game and not the "newer version of mario kart".

The next day GP hit which I wasn't participating in. Again I felt like I was too inexperienced to participate and enjoy the experience so to me it was fulfilling enough to watch Chris beat Lafungo out of his top 10 overal placement (jk fungo love u xoxo (but I mean let's be honest it was pretty funny))
I played some other games in the meantime with everyone else, which brings me to how amazing this community actually is. Thanks all :)

Some other memorable things I don't think I've mentioned yet:
- The bar being kept open til 2 AM with Conor showing some moves I've never seen before
- Watching the finals live with everyone saying "ooh" and "oOoooOoh" at every tiny little thing happening (I absolutely loved it)
- The management at the bar seeming to genuinely enjoy the event as a whole
- 3 Pretty much frame perfect finishes during MR all in my favor (thanks game  :-*)
- Andreas teaching me R-tech'
- CARELESS WHISPERRRR
- Playing Jordini in MKDD (He was the first one I saw sub 30 on All Cup Tour)
- Patrick finishing his N64 challenge and him ranting about how shit some games are later on that day
- Eating sushi with a lot of you in the hottest restaurant in town

As I'm new I don't have an opinion on how this CDM was compared to the other ones but all I can say was that I enjoyed it very much. The fortnite people, random playstation peeps and other non-CDM things did annoy me but I think that's because they weren't sure what to expect with CDM. I wouldn't be surprised if CDM does return to NL for another year that they would book the place full so no one can disturb us (especially during times where we were supposed to be quiet yet could only hear the loud screaming of a 12 year old drastically failing at moving his mouse to click on their heads)

Huge shout out to the organizing crew and all of you players for performing so well. Special thanks to Karel and co™ for letting us stay at your place.

Until next year (..?)
-Goom
