CDM 2019 / Qui sera le vainqueur du TT en 2019 ?
« le: 13 mai 2019, à 15:53:18 »
Since no one else is making these topics, as president I feel it's my duty to do something about that. ::) ;D

My predictions will follow. :)

CDM 2018 / perdu / trouvé
« le: 23 août 2018, à 14:01:25 »
It's no big deal, but MJ says the cartridge he took home with him is not his. Also, he doesn't have his own cartridge.

The cartridge he has now has a sticker with the word 'topy' on it.
MJs cartridge is (most likely) Dutch, so it might say NL somewhere in the fine print on the back or something. Also all his times are on it, such as 59"99 on MC1. He hasn't marked his cartridge though. That kind of also narrows it down in a way as most people have marked theirs.

Discussion générale / Crazy SMK Glitches (on video!)
« le: 24 mai 2018, à 11:10:17 »
We all know that the SMK engine can keep on surprising you with scenarios that are not supposed to be possible. After having played the game for literally thousands of hours, naturally you develop a keen sense of logic of how things normally behave within the framework of the game. But due to it's patchy programming (ok let's call it creative programming, to be more positive :P), exceptions to this 'normal' game behaviour happen almost every session. The idea of this topic is to capture those and share them with everyone. For me a large part of the beauty of SMK lies in experiencing these freak incidents. :D

I'm not sure if a similar topic already exists, I had a quick look, but didn't readily find one.
I think this topic could be fun, but it'd also be cool to try and understand why something happened like it did.

For instance, did you know it is possible to get picked up by Lakitu while you are within bounds and on the road? ???
This happened to me recently and I certainly don't recall ever seeing it before...a video will follow later!
Other things that can be put in this topic are things like Matt Ballard's famous claim of never getting ghosts on Rainbow Road*, crazy red shell behaviour or CPUs getting stuck in a spot indefinitely. Looking forward to your contributions! 8)

*perhaps specific to his NTSC cartridge? Anyway this is something that is yet to be explained. I would love to see a video of that phenomenon too, if you're reading this Matt!

Discussion générale / Speculations on the real age of Narnet
« le: 15 mars 2018, à 17:01:08 »
People in the Mario Kart Discord have been speculating what the real age is of Narnet. Obviously nobody believes the official age of 45 that is listed in the FFSMK database.
With that being said, the question how old Narnet really is remains an open one and a topic of intense discussion.

But...new shit has come to light!

I present some remarkable evidence that Narnet's year of birth at least pre-dates that of the era of Ancient Egypt (from 3000-200 B.C.)! In fact, all evidence seems to suggests that he was once a pharaoh...

I urge anyone to present further evidence to pinpoint Narnet's year of birth (and further support the case that he is indeed much older than commonly believed). 0:)

Tomorrow, Thursday, Feb 8 at 8pm (evening) our time twitch.tv/speedgaming will feature ScouB and me in a SMK (NTSC) Time Trial all courses race with Joe Bernier and Dan Hoernemann on commentary.
It'll be the clash of the WR titans! ;D O0

SpeedGaming is a speedrunning channel that aims to showcase a variety of games and runs and tomorrow it's SMK's turn. We hope to see a few of you in chat!

Hello all,

I believe the question is clear. I will shortly explain why we want to find this out.

One of the main obstacles for a CDM in the Netherlands is the price of the sleeping arrangements. The organising team has found a cheap hostel (10 per night), but public transport does not go there. It is clear that not nearly enough people are going to come by car to make driving groups of people back and forth to the hostel a good idea. Actually, even with enough cars this is probably a bad idea to begin with. So this poll is not to find out if you're available for playing taxi.

We came up with a backup plan to make the hostel deal in ter Aar feasible, which is to rent bikes! It's a 20 minute bike ride from the venue. I think it would be really sympa to have daily bike rides with the group during the CDM! :D We're in the country of bikes so why not?! Well, rain, that's why not, but ok. ;D ::) Of course renting bikes in such big numbers (60 or so?) is problematic, so we need to have an estimate of how many people would need to rent bikes in the first place. Let's say the whole of Plug & Play would come by car (even as a passenger), then we would like to know this. That would for example mean Ours, Banana and Pru are covered and do NOT need a bike (so we're at ~60 minus 3, etc.).

I'm really eager for this hostel deal to work, as I believe it would remove the main obstacle for the CDM 2018 in NL! :) So please answer here and feel free to ask any further questions.

EDIT: besides voting in the poll, please reply your choice in the topic.

Discussion générale / AI playing Super Mario Kart!
« le: 04 janvier 2018, à 11:09:25 »
See topic title and just watch the video!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyJRfDaDLq4

I find this development very, very interesting (and as with everything AI based, also a little scary potentially :P)
It says that the AI is learning to play SMK based on the inputs that the gamer has provided (so it's mimicking + trial and error). I strongly wonder what would happen if we fed inputs of a top player into the initial states... :fenner:

The AI and video are created by a famous name in gamer country, Seth Bling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SethBling). He also developed the credits warp in Super Mario World and actually build a working Atari computer within Minecraft! :o

Discussion générale / Playing with Super Power!
« le: 02 octobre 2017, à 19:54:02 »
Everyone who loves the SNES, just order this book, you will not regret it for 1 second! :o :o :o

It's a book written to accompany the release of the SNES Mini and features background, development, game details, high level (speedrunning) techniques and legacy sections for the following games: Super Mario World, F-Zero, The Legend of Zelda ALTTP, Super Mario Kart, Star Fox, Star Fox 2, Super Metroid, Super Punch-Out!!, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Course, Earthbound & Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. It's amazingly detailed and beautifully illustrated. Hard cover and nice and thick paper pages. Everything about this thing is quality! Put simply, this book is a celebration of the SNES, nothing more, nothing less.

I was interviewed to help with the SMK section (and apparently so was Sami):

I really had to laugh when I saw the term Scouby feather got written in stone in an official Nintendo franchize product....merité! ;D 8)

Gamasutra did a really cool article on Super Mario Kart!

I was approached via Twitter by the author and I'm really happy with the result I must say! :D

Discussion générale / Super Mario Kart @AGDQ 2017!
« le: 06 janvier 2017, à 19:14:23 »
Awesome Games Done Quick 2017 is starting its annual speedrunning marathon next Sunday, the 8th of January. I'm not sure if the AGDQ format needs any further introduction, but if it does, you can read all about it here: https://gamesdonequick.com/faq

Most of you already know this I guess, but Sami and me will be attending the event to showcase an SMK speedrun race! 8)
Anyway, here's all the info:

Time of SMK slot:
EST local time (Washington): January 8th 8:11 PM (20:14h)
French time: January 9th, 2:14 AM (a little late, but worth it hehe ;))

Single Segment Time Trial Race (all tracks, NTSC version)

Sami Çetin versus Karel van Duijvenboden (KVD)

Donation Incentive:
I'm actually not sure if we have a donation incentive this time. We submitted the same one as last year, a race of Match Race afterwards on a track of choice (most likely Choco Island 1 again as that works best in showing off all aspects of the mode). If the organisation included the incentive is not yet known though.

Of course we would be thrilled if people from the MK community donated during our run, regardless! :D Better still, I hope some of you will watch and support us! I will be posting a run-specific hashtag (#) on this board; if you're planning a donation then please include that #, so that it will stand out and be selected for announcement on stream during our run. :)

I'll leave you with a teaser.... from the 'staged' finish of last year's AGDQ run ;)
