@ Cedric, surprises solely due to randomness are bad in a competitive tournament, we want the kind of surprises that are enforced by skill (Conor's improved overall lvl for example).
i agree, but i think being eliminated because of a unwinable quaterfinal resulting form a #4 or #5 of his group isn t randomness, it is due to (unsuffisant) skill, because the player didn t manage to win the more important matchs of his group.
Also, you're confusing two arguments regarding groups. If you're defending current system, they are too innacurate to have the desired effect. With an expanded KO stage, we can live with such inaccuracies in poules, so it's no problem.
i wasn t present in this cdm, but i did not see any inaccurate ranking in poules, especially when there were 2 groups (not 4).
if you want a system which is forced to generate a totally predictable poule ranking, then i think it is no use to make poules at all.
i think it is important to have the possibility to outsiders to beat some stronger guys in poules, instead of making 18 rounds to be sure to prevent a pseudo strong players from losing against an outsider. i also think that actually, when an outsider beats a stronger player, it might be with a bit of luck, but it is a more lot due to great performance : you can win one round with a lightning in Mr or random green in BM, but you still need to beat 2 times out of the 3 rounds left to beat him ! ok, when jupiter is in correlation with saturn, a guy can win 2 or 3 rounds by pure luck, but it is so uncommon...
Ironically your comment about Sami and Neo being the thundergods of GP delivers a striking example of the inaccuracy of the single elim system. Sami, this year's GP champion was ranked behind Harold last year, despite being quite significantly better (no offense Harold). And why? Cos Sami faced Neo in semi finals. Apparently being so far ahead was still not sufficient to ovrrcome the flaws of the system. The scenario could have even occurred that Neo lost to BPA in 1/16 last year (1 random green could have sealed the deal). Neo would have gotten 16 to 9 ranking in GP. You might be attracted to these kind of surprises, but I would have REAL problems taking a competition seriously where Neo would be ranked outside top-8 in GP.
what would be the problem ? that neo lost against a guy who played better than him on the 3 cups in 1/8th final, or just that neo lost, no matter how ?
i do not see it as a problem if the other player played very well (i guess BPA played very well). would it have been a problem if neo didn t have a lightning at 6-6 against you and lost in quaterfinal ? i am not sure, because you deserved your victory. it's the same everywhere, everyone has to admit the cdm is 4 d-day competitions, and everyone has to be at the top in order to be ranked at his "predictible ranking".
