No with a more accurate KO system, we can have a less accurate (=shorter) group stage. We can have exactly the same number of matches as this year.

Well, he will still need to beat the others to get there. Real Madrid can also still be champion if they lose versus Osasuna once, what's the problem, like really?
Why would it not be a deserved result? So sprinter X got eliminated in quarter final, but he ran against Usain Bolt, the dominant world champion. If sprinter X can beat all the others and is 2nd best in the world, shouldn't he then have a chance to actually prove that? Right now we would deny him this chance, merely because he had the misfortune to draw vs Bolt early. That's what I call completement dingue.  >:D

Of course, and Neo won GP in 2009 even if he got beaten by two people. In the groupstage.

Quarterfinals have always been designed to have a final four in competitions history and the loser of a quarterfinal never advances anywhere. I lost against Scoub in MR and I think it would have made absolutely no sense at all to give me a chance to play again official MR matches to reach a silver medal while I was unable to make it to the final four.

Why should they have a chance? It's a final phase. You lost, you're out, 'nuff said. That's how it works and I don't get why this should work in a different way.

Tournament systems have evolved though. You might be used to the systems used in football and tennis, but in by far most videogaming competitions, double elimination systems such as this one are the order of the day. It's because most computer game matches are short and to reach a more accurate conclusion you'll need to buffer for it with a slightly more complex system.

Why should they have a chance?

I can turn the question around. Why should they NOT have the chance? Merely because they were unfortunate enough to meet the only player stronger than them in an early round? I think that's highly unfair and inaccurate.

Maybe, but having a guy knocked out in quarterfinals that can still be vice-champion will never make sense to me.

You like some colours, I like some others, you see what I mean? ;)

Yep, but for the past 10 years we've only seen 1 colour. It's time for a different colour to finally have a chance.
We'll see what the people favour in the end...

Well I won't oppose any change if the majority wants it. I'll just retire since I just can't play it this way, it goes beyond my conception of a championship.

You know what that means Mario? You and me will never participate in the same CDM again.  :(

Because for me it's the opposite. I will accept any decision, but I won't join again if the traditional system is kept intact.

You know what that means Mario? You and me will never participate in the same CDM again.  :(

Because for me it's the opposite. I will accept any decision, but I won't join again if the traditional system is kept intact.

Well, we'll still have a TT final together. ;)

Pfff, for every person (noob or pro) there's like 2 or 3 group matches that matter and those are best of 4 matches....it's little more than a coinflip for players that know how to hit gas and press A.  ::)

One thing Drew and me absolutely agreed on (and it might even throw our attendance in the balance if it's not implimented) is the fact that we need a more elaborate KO phase (read double elimination).

Again my overall ranking suffered hugely from getting extreme draws in early KO rounds (Drew in BM 1/16 and Flo in MR quarter finals). One might argue that you can avoid such draws by performing better in the group stage, but that argument can very easily be countered by the lack of matches that matter to determine the result of the group stage. As an example, an important ranking deciding match of the MR group I was in, was ScouB versus me. ScouB got a lightning on the final lap of MC2, killing my chance to win that battle. One could argue that luck evens out, but obviously it doesn't even out when there are so few important matches in the poules (chickens).

The problem that follows later is: I get Neo in quarter finals. Due to the evident QF elimination, I get awarded a number of points equivalent to an MR final ranking of #5-8. Geo could have reached the final, reaping up a #2 MR ranking, without necessarily being a better MR player than me. He would have merely avoided Neo and Sami until the final round.
I'm not saying that I think that I am a better MR player than Geo (I actually don't think that I am), but it serves to illustrate how the current system fails to distinguish a total ranking due to the single elimination format, where harsh draws can really unfairly damage ones ranking. Drew facing ScouB in quarter finals of BM is another example. He was now effectively awarded a #5-8 equivalent BM ranking, eventhough I would bet solid money on him beating Neo for a #4 face-off (no offense Flo). He spent a trans Atlantic trip playing 3 hours of group stage (where only 3 matches of 4 maps really contributed to his final seed ranking...equivalent of about ~20 mins perhaps?). Then 30 minutes of playing later, he is sent packing due to an easy 1/16 draw (me  ;D) and an insanely tough draw in the quarters. No wonder he is strongly considering not to join us next year if this does not change.

If the tournaments would be isolated from each other and treat as seperate entities, that would be fine (like in a football world cup for example). But the MAIN ranking of the CDM is the overall ranking; therefore it should probably be the main incentive of the CDM to result in as accurate a reflection of overall SMK ability as possible within the alloted time. I strongly believe a double elimination system would be infinitely more accurate than the sudden KO system we have now. In conclusion, we need a system where more time is spent facing players of similar level and less time of facing players that are either much weaker or much stronger than you. I think a group stage of 4 groups and double elimination in the KOs would suit this purpose.

OK I have read at least the first post that caused (the million) posts that followed..

Karel, I don't know if double elimination would be a good idea, but I think the system we tried in 2012 was not so bad (either the one used for PAL or NTSC!)

But yeh why not trying something else one more time :D
Making more groups /less matches would give time for doing the loser bracket and super finals ;)

good points :
- bad players don't lose too much time in ininteresting matches (and play other games)
- middle players can have a second chance in the loser bracket

so yes finally I agree with the system ::)

I'm affraid that with this kind of system some players will not play the groupestage really seriously
beeing 1 2 3 or 4 isn't a really matter, it's even a good thing to try to catch the favorite in 1/4 too have more chance to get Gold
This can have effects on the rankings near the 8th place.(but well they don't have to be that bad)
And if we change that fot 2p mode will have to change the TT rules  :-X

I'm affraid that with this kind of system some players will not play the groupestage really seriously

You mean "to get silver", but that's a good point. ;)
