CDM 2016: le bilan !
« le: 01 septembre 2016, à 02:00:45 »
A vos bilans ! ;)

Hello!

First off, I wanna say what a well organized event this years CDM was. It had its shortcomings (which il go into later in the post), but there were also a lot of positives. Some of which il outline now.

- As usual it was great to see everyone again, and to meet some new guys. Matt Ballard was awesome to meet (as well as his fan club lol).

- The general setup, equipment wise, was great. Solid big screen, cool looking lights and stuff, the TV with all the matches on, and plenty of SNES to play on. Really nice to have the technical stuff run seamlessly (which on occasion in the past it hasnt!)

- A lot less running about and stressing as is usual if you organize a CDM. Such as Florent, and Tif, when theyve been in charge. Leaving it to Ludus to do mustve been a big load off your mind.

- It was great to play all those arcade games and such which were part of the festival. (that massive Pong on the big screen ftw)

OK, now il list some of the negatives which im sure we all felt at some point during the week there. I dont mean to come off as ungrateful in any way before I continue. Just having a CDM to attend every year is excellent and something I look forward to greatly, so many thanks to all involved in organization this year. Your work is very much appreciated.

- I think most peoples biggest gripe with this years CDM was getting kicked out at midnight every day. Im not the worlds biggest night owl by any stretch, but I make allowances for CDM lol. It just takes the fun away having to leave so early. No time for other fun stuff like Bananas silly Japanese games, or playing some 4 player MM2 as has become tradition for me and a few others!

- Being in the centre of a big City. Strasbourg is a really nice city for sure, but it made it seem so much more inconvenient than usual by being there. CDM is a cheap week away for me, so I didnt want to shell out £250 on a hotel for my stay. At every CDM thus far its been an option if you want to stay at a hotel, but its never really been a necessity to have to like this year. Location is key imo, and I believe we already have that somewhere else  ::)

- The venue was great. At least it wouldve been great if we didnt have to share it with hundreds of other people not related to the CDM. I understand you guys can do nothing about the weather lol, but seen as it was so hot all these other people made being inside the venue almost unbearable. If they wernt there, and we had the venue to ourselves as we usually do, it wouldnt have been nearly as bad.

- Some of the staff were quite annoying. I understand there are rules to follow, but this was one of the things which made it feel really un-CDM-like to me. Constantly being told to put your drink on the floor, not to drink your beer from a can but from a Ludus cup, not eating in the venue etc. They all wore thin on me towards the end. I believe Martin was even told he cant be barefoot, which loads of people are at other CDMs!

- No BBQ!

On the whole it just wasnt the same fun experience as it usually is. I dont just come for SMK. I come to meet up with old friends, drink some beers, and have a fun time. Which it felt like was sucked out of the CDM this year what with the rigid timetable, and countless rules.

I understand the want to make SMK competition more professional, and more akin to modern esports. But I think the best thing we have going for us is our truly awesome community. And I dont believe you can have both. Either an esport, or a great community. And if it continues this way, its something I believe we'll lose. You can count me out of it anyway if this is the way its gonna get pushed every year.

That said, there were some great moments at least as far as SMK is concerned. Like Christians superb run to the GP Semis, Juliens overall win (mega congrats mate, well earned!), and that crazy BM final!

I hope I havent come off as too harsh, but im just being honest. If this was just an experiment, then great, it was def worth trying and weve learned a lot. But if its gonna be this way every year then I fear it'll put a lot of great people off from attending again.

Much love.

Hey everyone, I thought that it was about time I made an account on this forum. In the past I have never really given my opinion on the CDM on this type of platform but I feel that this year, I should. Although, I do think Clark's post really nailed it on the head!

I want to start by thanking FFSMK for once again making this event possible, it is always the highlight of my year and it never fails to be a great experience. Organising a CDM must not be easy, so I commend you all for that!

Some good points from this CDM:
1. There was great media coverage of the event, making French national TV is simply amazing and it was so cool to be able to show my friends and family at home.

2. Being a medieval history nerd, I felt that Strasbourg was a lovely cultural location- highlight for me was of course the Cathedral

3. The TV and stream set up was awesome- I felt that it was great having 5 TV's up on the stage and there was never a moment when the TV I was assigned to did not work. Everything felt smooth.

4. I liked that there was a variation of other games for me to play e.g. Pacman and MKDS

5. The opportunity to meet Kayane was amazing as I have been following her career for the past few years

6. Finally, the best part of the event was seeing all you crazy, beautiful and weird people again  ;D

Now for the opposite argument:
1. I understand completely that the number 1 language of the event is French as we are obviously in France, but, it would have been nice if even a tiny portion of the opening ceremony was in English as it usually is. While we are not the majority, there are English speakers who unfortunately, were left seated feeling quite confused as we did not understand anything  ??? I think all I got was "bonne chance"  ;D  This is just a small point btw, it didn't leave me angry or anything like that :)

2. Noise- at times the background music was so loud that I missed zoomstarts and found it very hard to concentrate. This was the same for many others who I had spoken to during our matches. I felt like it didn't really occur to Ludus that we were competing and no distractions were ideal.

3. Like Clark said, it was very irritating to have to leave the venue at midnight. I think it's quite ridiculous that we had to stand outside for half an hour just to carry on a conversation because we no longer had the right to remain indoors. Of course, many of you went to bars after but this clearly wasn't an option for me given the fact that I am still 17  ::) ::) ::) I missed staying up until 4am, playing weird games and chatting about stupid stuff. This wasn't possible at this CDM which was disappointing.

4. Similarly as Clark, I was also told off for having a SEALED water bottle near a TV when there were open cans of fanta around too. The Ludus guy didn't say anything about those even though they were clearly of a higher risk than my water, which was very unlikely to have spilled. A security guard also told me off for moving a chair, which I only did because there was limited seating at the centre. I understand safety precautions but I didn't like feeling that I was a child in school who had to constantly watch what they were doing so it didn't upset an authority figure.

5. I am no scientist but even I know that having excessive amounts of technology in one room generates heat, as well as the tons of people who are crammed together. 33 degrees C outside didn't help either and I felt like the lack of open space is what made the hall so humid. Of course, nobody can control the weather, but I think Ludus should have thought about the consequences of their set up and considered the comfort of the people there. I just think they tried to put too much in one room.

6. The main thing that saddened me this CDM was a lack of community spirit- this was my 5th CDM and every year without fail when my friends would ask for funny stories, I would to have so many to share. This may sound harsh and dramatic but for the very first time, when I was asked the day after I got home, I realised that I had no stories to share- because there was no opportunity for anything like that to happen. I can imagine Drew wouldn't have wanted to climb up the building as a security guard kept his eyes on him. Obviously I had some great laughs, but nothing truly memorable happened this year as I felt like we were all trying to stick to the new routine.

I agree completely with the points made that you can't have both an e-sport tournament and a fun community gathering. A compromise could be possible, but at the end of the day, what is more important? Having fame and recognition or meeting your friends and having a laugh? I honestly think that in the search for a "greater CDM", changes have been made which take away the spirit that made the CDM so special in the first place. In my opinion, La Suze was near perfect! I love the CDM and this community but I don't want to see it become a lifeless commercial event. I can think of a few people who told me that if it continued this way, they would not come anymore  :'( :'( :'(

Once again thank you so much to FFSMK for making the CDM possible year after year. This is a truly amazing thing that we are a part of and I feel so lucky that I get to experience this! Also, I'm sorry that this post is in English, I would attempt to write in French but I feel like it would not be that successful  ;D ;D ;D ;D

a moi, a moi, a moi !!!

In this month many survey (3 or 4) will arrive on the site for determine the futur of cdm's so stay turned ;)

OK, so I did have quite a long post written out but it seems kind of unnecessary since a lot has already been covered (see Zarkov and Leyla's posts). I'll start by thanking everyone involved in the organisation of cdm for their hard work every year in making it happen, it is appreciated.

For me, cdm always has been first and foremost about the fun of the event and greatness of the people attending (yes I mean all of you, wonderful people), with the game very much taking second stage in my mind. This year it seemed very much to have switched focus and been almost entirely about the game and very little about the people attending. I don't understand the reasons why it is trying to be pushed as an esport when it clearly isn't an esport, it's a bunch of people playing an old, niche game. We may have 50 people attending, but the vast majority of us really aren't very good at the game and maybe play it one or two weeks a year (and then only because of cdm). In reality there are maybe 6-8 people who attend who are actually good at the game and the rest are there just to have fun and see old friends, the game will never get much bigger than it is now and with the steep learning curve involved you could maybe get one or two new top players every three or four years so basically what we have now is really about what we always have player wise. The game will never grow into a big thing, and no matter how much people try to force it otherwise, all that will happen is the numbers attending will probably reduce as those of us who come for the fun of the event will lose any reason for attending in the future.

I really hope that things go back to how they were and that this year was just an experiment (I can understand some of the reasons for trying it out). Given the number of people at the cdm who were openly discussing how much they preferred previous cdm's over the one we were at (at one point there were three separate groups all talking about the same thing in the outside area), I do remain hopeful that things will return to how they were in the future.

I think one of the most telling things about peoples views this years are the write-ups. Ususally within a couple of days of cdm ending there are pages of write-ups on both this and the English MB with people saying how much of a great time they had. This year there was nothing, it seems that people were waiting (at least I was) for someone to start the ball rolling on the, for want of a better word, criticism of the cdm.

If this is the future of the cdm, then it will be a future that will have to go on without me as I have limited free time to take off work (and I already attend the mk64 meet we hold in Germany every year) and just could not justify the extra holiday I have to take for an event that simply isn't fun anymore.

OK, so that was a lot more moaning than I intended, so I'll end on a positive. The barman was awesome and should attend every year irrespective of where cdm is held (the bald guy with the beard).
If you haven't, you really, really need to read this book, it will change your life:
