with everyone discussing everything constantly in discord and whatsapp I think there is seen as little point in writing a report on a message board that will be mostly read by people who were there anyway.
If you haven't, you really, really need to read this book, it will change your life:

DAY 1 - OPENING CEREMONY, TIME TRIAL.

Je me retrouve en duo avec Holly Watson, from team Horse and Sexy, Queen of the Cross Stitches.

JOUR 2 – BATTLE MODE : Breaking the curse

At all.

J’ai évidemment pleuré quand Takashi a gagné contre Lafungo.

« One last question... »

JOUR 5 – CLOSING DAY

Endless thanks to Karel, Patrick, Marius, Scoub, Narnet, Lafungo, the entire arena staff, Goomba, Moll.

Thanks Holly for watching me and supporting me during knock out stage of Time Trial. And I’m wearing your Prix du Mérite so proudly !

Tête perplexe de Sargoth : « You’re… Cold ? » Réponse immédiate de Karel : « Norway ? Meet Tunisia . »   :fireball:

Leyla, for ever, I think I will never be able to skip my annual cry when we say goodbye. I am so proud of you and so happy we met. See you very soon! <3 <3 <3

I'm calling BS on that one. When the question was asked, we were told to exclude rookies, so it should have been 200 (if we were to believe the stats given in the opening ceromony of 210 total competitors including the 10 rookies).
If you haven't, you really, really need to read this book, it will change your life:

Awesome bilan, Sophie! Like a good citizen of the world, I tried my best to read the French before I gave up after the first couple of paragraphs and hit that translate button  ;D

A lot of the stuff you mentioned I'm also going to talk about in my own bilan, so hopefully by next CDM that'll finally be ready (...this goddamn English summary is taking forever... ::) )- but seriously, thank you so much for all of your support with everything. Je t'aime!  <3  you will always be the person with the loudest scream after my match with Jey and that is pretty special  ;D

...oh and hell yeah, you are gonna make Top 8 next year so don't worry about that!

Side note, I'm also looking forward to reading your reflection of the social side of the CDM, Guillaume! Africa by Toto suddenly springs to mind...

Bilan #SMKC19
« Réponse #29 le: 12 septembre 2019, à 17:24:15 »
With that extremely LONG summary now out of the way, I had time to write my bilan. I’d normally discuss other karter’s matches in my day-by-day overview but since I went through ALL of the statistics to write the summary, I’m thinking that I deserve to be selfish here and only talk about myself  ;D So once again, for the EIGTH (already!!!) edition, here is my CDM reflection:*

*which is on this forum cos I don’t have Discord and have no idea what anyone has said on there  :P

Preparations

When I finished my 2nd year uni exams and coursework in May, I told myself that I was going to use the whole summer to train for the CDM. I would delve back into TT, practice some shortcuts and zoom starts on MR, finally fulfil my promise to Sophie that I would submit times for the GP site and even try to practice BM with Sami. Well, from some of my performances this edition, it is clear to see that I somehow didn’t manage to keep to this plan- I would laugh, but at times it was pretty tragic. And the culprit? Work- that lovely practice. Little old me got a job for the summer selling furniture and it’s a far cry from VL2, I’ll tell you that. So, there we go, 3 months later and with only around 2 weeks total SMK training on/off, it was time again to journey to the Netherlands, where ANYTHING could happen…

Monday- Early Arrival Day

Anyone who knows Sami and hasn’t lived under a rock for 20 years knows that my uncle likes to travel early, and the earlier the better. We could’ve been living in Leiden rather than Croydon and he still would’ve made us leave home 36 hours before the competition began, cos you know, JUST IN CASE. After a slightly delayed flight, a debate over which route to take from Schiphol to Alphen (I was right in the end, of course  0:)) and a nice long walk from Alphen station (where I was mercilessly attacked in the street by a giant swan, true story), we made it to the hotel in the mid-afternoon. We were pretty tired and took a nap before the three of us walked to the local snackbar for dinner. Here I spent a good couple of hours essentially having my own counselling session with Conor, who is AMAZING at giving life advice. If you are ever in need of help, he’s the one to go to, but if it’s self-sabotage that you’re after, then you’re probably safer with me. All jokes aside, it was a pleasant end to the day. Now all that awaited was the competition itself and the three of us were itching to see what would happen!

Side note: I’d last minute decided to vlog the CDM after a lovely work colleague suggested I start a YouTube channel where I could spread word of our community. I filmed our travelling day and early morning of Tuesday but sadly ended up stopping because the pain from the mosquito bites destroyed my motivation. I’m debating about still making a small video with a compilation of the footage I did get so if anyone cares enough to see it then let me know!

Tuesday- Time Trial

When I woke up on Tuesday morning my whole body was in AGONY and my bones genuinely hurt like hell. Basically, Dutch mosquitoes can suck a you-know-what. I’m pretty sure that I showed almost everyone in the venue my swollen arms and legs because I was bitter and wanted them to feel sorry for me  ;D One Dutch rain downpour later (which I believe to be pathetic fallacy foreshadowing my TT performance), we were at the Esports Game Arena for the reunions and first meetings with the new rookies. Again, I’m sorry if I was painfully awkward when I greeted anyone, the whole “hey haven’t seen you in a year, how you been?” thing makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. Lafungo even returned to me 10 minutes after I awkwardly waved at him to ask for a better introduction so if that isn’t appropriate evidence, then I don’t know what is.

Now onto the competition, where I had a secret quest to prevent Sami from winning back the UK #1 TT title because let’s face it, he’s won it way too many times  >:D 0:) In the group stage I was paired with David Senior from Australia, a really cool guy with a lot of SMK talent, as proven by the Australian title he took this edition. My own timeset felt pretty strong as I was doing it, with only one missed zoom start on BC1, so I finished the group at a solid 8th place. For the Top 16 I was put in between Salim and Chris Wild and as we waited to get started, Chris and I spoke about the new format and how it instilled a new kind of fear in us. It wasn’t so bad to get knocked out in the Top 16 in previous years because at least you went with seven other people- now it was only you and you alone if you messed up, and this TERRIFIED me. For the first two to three tracks both of us were safe, as after every time I crossed the finish line Chris would turn to me and say “don’t worry, we’re okay!” and I welcomed the reassurance. It’s a shame it then wouldn’t last  :'(

I was unfortunately the fourth to be knocked out of Last Karter Standing, purely because of a missed zoom start on MC4. I was completely shocked when it happened because I knew that this track had a slightly later trigger time and I had NEVER missed it before. I remember jumping in my chair, flinching in absolute confusion and bewilderment. I drove the race itself very well, missed no boosts and took the corners pretty tightly in a desperate attempt to make up the time. But unfortunately it wasn’t enough and despite the bad missed zoom, I was only a mere 42 milliseconds behind Jey. I don’t know exactly about how much time you save with missing a zoom that is too late rather than missing one because you pressed A too early (which is what I did), but maybe it would’ve JUST saved enough. It was extremely disappointing to go out in 13th place in my joint-favourite mode, especially when I was defending a quarter-final position and knew from my group stage that 13th wasn’t a true reflection of myself.

ACTUAL SCENE:
Me: *hugs Sami after TT final* Well done btw!
Sami: Hey I got my UK title back!
Me: I’m gonna smack you in a minute, dickhead!

I would’ve rather Adam Ferguson took the UK #1 instead- sorry Sami  ;) But seriously, Adam did AMAZING to make 9th place and I’m really disappointed for him that he just missed the quarter. Next year we should both make a pact to push Sami down to the UK #3, right Adam?  ;)

Wednesday- Battle Mode

The group stage went its usual way for me, with a string of 3-1 losses to the top guys, a tie with both Sophie and Conor and some remaining wins, one of which was unexpectedly against Geo. In that latter match I could feel myself being on fire and while Geo obviously wasn’t playing to his gold medal standard, I did know that I had played well and the result hadn’t rested wholly on bad luck or even sneaky tactics on Geo’s part. I think that my Top 16 match proved this fact about my performance as my 14th place in the group brought me to face Drew. I’ve played against Drew a couple of times in the Top 16 for BM and those matches always ended poorly for me with a 5-1 or even 5-0 loss. But this time was different. The sudden rush of confidence I had when I played against Geo in the group came back in this game and while I hardly remember any of the small details (it was such a blur), I know again that I played the best battle of my life. It’s just a shame that I lost 5-4, as at that time, BM would’ve been my first multiplayer mode to achieve a quarter final in. You just can’t make this shit up! Next time I will be back with a vengeance…I hope!

Thursday- Match Race

My unexpected end to BM gave me a hell of a lot of confident for MR day. Surely if I could almost make a quarter final in what used to be my most hated mode (this isn’t the truth anymore, sorry GP  :P), then I could make it in one of my favourites? It was certainly about damn time, for years and years I had suffered with so many close encounters and “what ifs?” that I thought it should’ve happened by now. Not gonna lie, knowing that it would nullify one of Lafungo’s statistics was motivation enough  :-*

The group stage was so-so compared to previous years; I had an unfortunate 3-1 loss on stream against Sami which I ranted about on Twitter (thanks Captain Thunderbolt!), another unfortunate loss to Conor among a couple others and the remaining games ended in wins. I placed 12th in the group which was just enough to avoid the barrage, although I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t disconcerted by the format of the bracket, knowing that it was an exact replica of the 2015 disaster which saw Jey knock out both me and Sami early on. Even Sami knew this would be a horror quarter final for him and he would’ve rather had to face anyone else, which is a testament to Jey’s ability as a player. Like I said in my summary, history was likely to repeat itself. Similarly to my battle with Drew, my mind has blurred out the details of the game and I only remember how I felt as it was taking place.

When I was 4-2 down I was practically laughing in my head, thinking that it was obviously over and once again I’d failed to make an impact. I think that this is what helped me; because I had absolutely zero fear about what was likely to happen, something in my mind just clicked and it took me to 4-4. This was when I did get pretty nervous. It would’ve been pretty shitty to be 4-2 down, make a comeback and then JUST lose in the last track so I knew I had to win, somehow. However, I think it would’ve been worse for Jey to be leading 4-2 and then lose, especially because he was seeded 5th and I was only 12th- I think he had a lot more to lose than I did, which is probably why he made that fatal error on GV3 which saved me. All I remember from that moment is crossing the finish line and hearing Sophie screaming, which was the best thing I could’ve heard and made my day!

FUN FACT: a couple of weeks prior to the CDM, Sami had NEVER been able to trigger the big GV2 feather shortcut he made against Scoub, even in practice at home. He’d been trying for years and it was driving him insane. Even though he ultimately lost to Scoub, it was impressive for him to make this jump, leaving him thankful for the one person who actually learnt how to do it before he did and subsequently tried teaching him back home. It’s up you to guess their identity…  ::) :plume:

Friday- Grand Prix

I think that after two great days, the Karting Gods declared: “A great GP day? Of course you SHALL NOT have that, young Leyla!”. My group stage was quite frankly a DISASTER. Started off with a 36-36 tie with Lafungo wherein I was winning MC3 and set to take the overall win until on the FINAL CORNER Princess Bitch  :peach: smacked into me and allowed Lafungo to just past me for first. Good omen, right? WRONG. I suffered a 39-36 defeat to Guillaume as well as defeats to Salim and Jey (thanks flying items landing on me <3) but the worst were to come from my defeats to Raph Braun and Drew. Admittedly, my defeat to Raph very early on was entirely my own fault because I did the STUPIDEST thing ever on CI1 which ranked me out. You know those moments where it’s like you’ve temporarily lost your brain cells and are somebody’s voodoo doll, doing utter ridiculous shit that you never normally would? That was me and I partly feel like the rest of my day was punishment deserved for being so stupid. I can be a lot more angry at the game for my defeat to Drew, a Mushroom Cup where I was leading on MC2, ready to win the cup (I think comfortably, but I’m not too sure) whereby Drew got a lightning towards the end, triggered it when I was on the jump and subsequently ranked me out to take the overall victory. He was apologetic and I was bitter. Need I say more?

The horror show left me unsurprisingly in 17th place in the group, my first barrage being against Mike Hulscher and honestly, I would’ve rather just lost right there and then because my victory here was so undeserved. I was embarrassed and this was certainly when I mentally lost it and wasn’t in the right frame of mind anymore. As I played Martin in the Q2 match I knew that I shouldn’t have been there and I was so sick of the whole day that I barely tried, I just wanted it to be over with. With hindsight, I’m quite disappointed in myself for not trying to stick it out but after the horrific group stage, my mind was thrown into such disarray that I simply couldn’t. I knew deep down 17th place in the group was not a true reflection of my level and my knockout stage was practically over before it had even begun. It’s just a shame because had I qualified to the Top 16 as I normally did, I would’ve made the Top 10 overall  :'( But I believe that everything happens for a reason and not being in the Top 16 matches myself meant I got to watch them all as a spectator and this provided some of my greatest CDM memories ever <3

Personal highlights <3

Competitive:

-Beating Jey 5-4 in the Match Race Top 16, making my first multiplayer quarter-final- I WAS SO HAPPY
-Nearly knocking Drew out in the Battle Mode Top 16, losing 5-4
-Scoub winning the overall title for the 4th consecutive time- just watching you play is insane and I wish that I could one day even measure up to an ounce of your level!
-Takashi and Lafungo’s GP Top 16- oh my god, the most exhilarating match I’ve ever witnessed…thank you guys for gifting us with this!
-Sophie’s quarter finals in TT and GP, as well as her overall Top 10 position. Our Arya Stark is an absolute Queen <3
-Witnessing the one-player Battle Mode contest in honour of Our Lord and Saviour T-Man
-A continuation of awesome games with Raph Braun: so it looks like our new VL1 is now GV2??  ;D
-Having the FUNNIEST Star Cup group stage match with Patrick- another guy who year after year becomes an even better friend to me. I don’t want to make you feel old but I think you must qualify as my surrogate Dutch uncle now or something  ;D <3

Social:

-Celine Dion and The Bangles carpool karaoke back to the hotel with Moll, Chris Wild, Conor and Michael Sumner- “Say my name, bitch!”
-Sophie, Guillaume and I performing the entirety of Bohemian Rhapsody together- WE NEED CDM KARAOKE!!
-Sophie and I performing a duet of ‘A Whole New World’ from Aladdin, where Sophie sang Aladdin’s parts in French and I sang as Jasmine in English. It was beautiful!
-Come Legendre being absolutely wasted drunk on Friday night and ‘phoning’ the mosquitoes, demanding to know why they kept viscously biting me
-Takashi’s speech at the closing ceremony, which was so unexpected and made me cry
-The food. Lars is a legend and the food was spectacular. Hearing his life story while we ate at De Beren was a super cool experience too and his journey is admirable!
-Moll cheering me up on TT night by showing me his spreadsheet regarding his own performance- you always make me laugh whenever I'm down at any CDM without fail and I genuinely thank you for this!
-My life chats with Guillaume, who every time I see him becomes a dearer and dearer friend to me <3
-Learning Dutch with Rolf and Mike Koehoorn: my favourite new phrase is “neuken in de keuken” so thanks for that  ;D although from the way they laughed at my pronunciation of some other words, I’m guessing I won’t be becoming an honourary Dutch citizen anytime soon!
-Rolf and Mike themselves: the two most adorable Dutchies I’ve ever met, what a pair of cinnamon rolls!
-Meeting and getting to know all of the new guys- shout outs to Rolf, Simon, Adam, Christopher, Lucy, Holly, Paul and David!
-Having fun with Conor commentating on the stream in-between matches for 5 mins- next year I think I’m gonna properly join him  :)
-Sophie taunting Jey and Salim about their overall rankings being behind mine and hers, which they were NOT pleased about…especially Salim
-Discovering the mad world of “Skibidi”  O0
-Having a lot of great banter with Lafungo- I very kindly made sure to fuck up the two statistics he’d pointed out that concerned me, albeit one of them did occur because I played shit in my GP barrage haha. On a more serious note, I regret not really talking to Lafungo at previous CDMs because I think this edition proved we get along pretty well!
-Sami telling me of a conversation he and Karel had at the end of Match Race- Sami: (quoting Florent from 2012) You can’t win forever…   Karel: Well I never win anything  ;D ;D ;D
-Sophie describing a certain type of medical camera in the funniest way I have ever heard- do you remember what you called it?  ;D ;D ;D
-Sophie Jarmouni herself. That’s it. That’s the highlight. <3
-The ever-supportive bar staff at the Esports Game Arena; I really think that the event wouldn’t be the same without them and it was such a privilege to return to them this year
-Having the utmost privilege to see the SMK community ‘veterans’ once again. It sometimes hits me that I’ve known you guys personally and/or known of you, for most of my life which is CRAZY. So Florent, Karel, Patrick, Guillaume, Scoub, Geo and Harold- thank you all for being so lovely! You are the true foundations of this community <3

And with that I now disappear, much love to you all and see you next year!
